EMASS ECS-DoT: Asset Tracking Reference Architecture

In collaboration with Bosch Sensortec, EMASS has now introduced a new intelligent reference design for battery-powered asset tracking applications, combining Bosch Sensortec’s advanced sensing with the ultra-low-power edge AI capabilities of the EMASS ECS-DoT Edge AI SOC for the facilitated development of next-generation asset-tracking solutions. 

The reference design integrates the EMASS ECS-DoT SoC with five Bosch Sensortec sensors covering motion, environmental, magnetic, pressure, and gas sensing technologies.

While conventional asset-tracking systems activate sensors and communication resources at predefined intervals, the event-driven EMASS and Bosch Sensortec reference design enables continuous sensing and AI inference at ultra-low power and specifically determines relevant events requiring higher-power resources, such as wireless communication, and GPS positioning.

With the local processing of all multimodal sensor data, the reference design can run edge AI models to continuously assess the condition and context of an asset to selectively transmit only relevant, actionable information instead of continuous streams of raw sensor data.

Positioning or wireless communication resources are then only activated when relevant events are detected, enabling context-aware asset tracking while at the same time reducing power consumption and connectivity requirements. This approach also allows for the provision of relevant information during periods in which GPS is unavailable/ not activated and can additionally benefit battery life as well as lower connectivity costs.

The reference architecture advances the development options for battery-powered tracking applications used in i.e., warehouse logistics, cold-chain monitoring, high-value asset protection, industrial IoT, and other use cases.

The configurable EMASS x Bosch Sensortec reference design can be individually adapted to specific sensing, processing, connectivity, and power requirements.
